Linux support for M3 series SoCs and the machines powered by them is now in a state where almost everything supported on the M1 and M2 series machines just works. This includes the webcam, internal microphones, USB (up to the hardware limit of USB 3 10 Gb/s), hardware accelerated video decoding including support for AV1, WiFi, Bluetooth, and much more! The only major exceptions remain full DCP support and the GPU, which we will have more news on in the coming months. Do not expect performant or power-efficient 3D acceleration right now.
I wonder if this means theyve made progress on video encoding too…
What is the “can’t count to three” joke about here? Did they skip supporting M2 or something?
M2: Episode 1 (or, Asahi Linux on M3)
Looks like its called M2 Episode 1, which is an alternative name for M3. But this is just the article title? I don’t think they know how the “can’t count to three”-joke by Valve works either.^^
I think it refers to Valve Software never releasing the third game in their series, like Half-Life 3 and Team Fortress 3.
That’s usually how “can’t count to three” jokes work, but this is clearly an announcement about someone successfully releasing a #3 of something. I don’t get it.
It makes internal sense because they named the blog-post without using 3.
But it doesn’t make sense to me either, because they are releasing the 3rd of something, and i have no context re: why they wouldn’t count to 3, unlike with valve.

To this day it is beyond me why people spend hours upon hours in reverse engineering the most proprietary manufactured hardware on earth and shoving more free money down Apples throat instead of just buying something else.
Lots of people that aren’t me are going to make the choice to purchase Apple hardware. Some of that hardware will eventually be sold, donated or gifted with many years of use left. Thanks to projects like Ashai, recipients of the second hand hardware can spend those years on Linux instead on Apple software.
I would much rather the original purchasers buy open hardware but until that becomes their priority there will continue to be an endless stream of proprietary hardware ending up in the hands of people who had no input on the purchase decision.
I use it because Apple is the only manufacturer that understands that laptops need great displays, keyboards, and trackpads. Most other laptop manufacturers fail in one or all of those categories. The new Framework 13 may be an exception to this, but as someone that bought the 16, that was hot garbage. So I gave it up for a Macbook.
With Asahi, I have a rock-solid Linux experience on a laptop with good build quality.
Oh, also speakers. Apple puts decent speakers in their laptops. The FW 16 had worse sound than many phones that I’ve had.
It’s not really that Apple put decent speakers in their laptops. They use very smart software-DSP technology to make them sound good. And that’s a prowess. See https://github.com/AsahiLinux/asahi-audio
They have a good DSP for sure, but those speakers on their own can get louder than any other laptop I’ve ever heard while maintaining pretty decent clarity (to my layperson ears). The DSP can help with the clarity and quality, but the actual loudness and hardware capabilities also seems better.
the apple chip has some really powerful properties for graphic processing and runninh local models for a laptop chip, the enemy want to keep it closed and theirs
Because millions own macbooks and if they support then it can save at least some from obsilescense and e-waste.
This e-waste would not exist if certain people wouldn’t buy Apple devices in the first place…
I mean, you don’t have to buy it. You can buy whatever you want. Hacking stuff just to see if you can hack it is the majority of the motivation behind hacking in the first place.
Especially when products like the Macbook Neo is surprisingly affordable and offers a halfway decent build quality and performance for its weight class, it’s nice to have something like Asahi to make it a real option.
