Sure but the update can already have done some stuff, leaving your machine in a half-updated and maybe corrupted state. If downclocking doesn’t work there really isn’t a good solution here.

Edit: oh wait there is, DON’T UPDATE WHEN SLEEPING. And on top of that, just don’t update without my explicit approval at all. Thankfully I run linux where, if it’s not the default already, it’s a config value away.

The system randomly waking up and deciding to do work

My work macbook did this by default as well, among other dumb things like leaving bluetooth enabled on sleep so my headphones would constantly connect to the laptop when on the train trying to listen to music.

Thankfully the waking up thing is just a setting, but by default, imho, mac os’s sleep is also garbage.

What if the person you’re helping has a different UI language? Or when buttons get hidden based on available screen space? Or when you need to get an older person to use a dropdown menu with hover and click options?

Sure it’s doable, but it’s so much easier to just copy and paste a command. Of course, whenever I tell someone to do something like this, it comes with a lot of warnings about the shell. If they’re close enough I just tell them to never run a random command without consulting me first.

Those gl flatpaks are actually the display drivers. Flatpak doea not use any system libraries, it has to depend on a flatpak for everything, but most things are already in org.freedesktop.Platform, but not nvidia drivers of course.

Heroic lets you add plenty of custom stuff. The only thing I’m missing from lutris is tagging/grouping of games, everything else I ever used in lutris is available in heroic.

But you could find out all of those things by looking for the code and the PR that fixed it. You could also have debugged it, since source code is available. Not so on windows generally.

Afaik grub should not have any effect on shutting down. Grub is the bootloader, after it has loaded the kernel, it’s done.

They also license it to car manufacturers, which is probably why that bit is not open-source. It’s a big source of income for them.

And to add even more, the reason this is important, is because in-game fps counters/overlays use an average over a short period. Quick lag spikes can make a game feel horrible while the counter displays a solid 60fps.

Another benefit of a separate home you can keep is that a lot of linux-native programs store their preferences and other stuff in ~/.config or ~/.share, so you get the added bonus of not having to set these programs up again as well.

Don’t the screenshots get saved with your user as the owner? The only real difference is that other users can list your screenshots in /tmp afaict.

Yeah, I don’t agree with Linus’ stance at all. But the alternatives are macos and windows lmao, hardly a fair comparison. I do need some form of os on my PC, and Linux is still the best option. I don’t need xfce or xfwl however, I’ll just pick a different DE.
