Linux@lemmy.ml•Bottles' Founder Has Managed to Run Microsoft 365 on Linux
1·26 days agoIt’s great… if you love Office 2007. But it has too many weird quirks and refuses to make any interesting changes to move forward past that.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Bottles' Founder Has Managed to Run Microsoft 365 on Linux
1·26 days agoI meant more for the layman who is more comfortable with a wysiwyg system. For me it is great, and I think LyX’s “WYSIWYM” concept is wonderful. But I’d never ask a non-IT co worker to consider those.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Bottles' Founder Has Managed to Run Microsoft 365 on Linux
1·26 days agoI adore latex but the barrier to entry is a little too high. LyX is kinda-sorta there but not really.
Remember the old days before /dev was its own virtual filesystem?
I am the Linux folks.
FreeIPA is fine, and I don’t care much about the GPO aspect of Active Directory. But the standardization-by-ubiquity that made it easy for everyone to just follow along and make it so it Just Works has been a godsend.
Yes Microsoft built on the shoulders of giants but trying to make things work with OpenLDAP or the other also-ran directory services was a nightmare.
keywords like
fiandesacBut it’s so clever!
Second best. The best was Active Directory.
Honestly it’s pretty good, but it’s very verbose in its commands and output.
The default settings are irritating but it takes only minor tweaks to make it tolerable (mainly fixing the tab completion)
It’s nicely consistent with its object handling.
As a windows shell it is head and shoulders above cmd.exe. I’ve thought about using it on Linux but there I like fish better.
Linux doesn’t generally use extensions to decide what shell to use, so it doesn’t matter if it’s an sh file or not.
If it uses bash of course you can substitute #!/bin/bash
And of course you can use whatever shell you want, just saying that POSIX-compliance is not really relevant since the script can specify what shell it needs.
#!/bin/sh
Hope this helps
Me trying to get LLM tools to work.
Well there’s your first problem.
I used to, before the Internet went shit. Now it’s all AI spam shit telling you how to do everything you’ve already tried.

Linux@lemmy.ml•How to check if a new type of charger is harming your laptops battery?
1·3 months agoThat sounds right.
I’m also mostly familiar with the business lines: Dell Latitude and slightly less with HP ProBook.

Linux@lemmy.ml•How to check if a new type of charger is harming your laptops battery?
1·3 months agoGiven the context that we were talking about laptop chargers rather than generic power bricks, I think it’s fair to consider standard laptop power supplies. (HP has the same connectors even though their protocol is different, and I’m not familiar with other brands but I expect they are much the same).

Linux@lemmy.ml•How to check if a new type of charger is harming your laptops battery?
21·3 months agoUnfortunately, barrel plugs tell you zilch about the power supply they’re connected to. They’re a dumb connector with no data capability whatsoever, and I’ve seen the same size of plug on power supplies with output anywhere from 3V to 24V.
That’s definitely not true: Dell laptop chargers and desktop power supplies do communicate what wattage they are able to supply.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Why are so many Linux projects on Microsoft GitHub? Shouldn't they all move to Codeberg?
11·4 months agoIf it helps to explain it, Red Hat is owned by IBM.

Interesting! I’ve been a longtime Linux user mostly with debian-based systems (Debian, Ubuntu, Pop!) And it’s been interesting to me how one small thing or another will do that.
For me it is usually Kerberos / domain authentication things that are unnecessarily tough to set up in one distro or another.
