Linux@lemmy.ml•Is anybody running Linux on ARM laptops? (Mediatek, Qualcomm Snapdragon, etc.)English
6·7 months agoI’ve been hesitant to do this to my own MacBook. How’s the battery life? Any caveats apart from the usb-c display driver?
Fuck that’s beautiful 🥲
For motivation I’d recommend lessons with someone, or finding a band to join. Having another person involved may help keep the drive up.
Fun lesson - I personally enjoy making a playlist of tunes I like (or want to learn), then playing along. Helps with endurance & improv

20·7 months agoFrom the article:
Flatpak is NOT a distro, but that’s what Steam reports when it’s running on Flatpak, and Flatpak being distro independent we report it as a separate environment, if that makes sense. Feel free to ignore it if you wish.

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Pirated Ableton on Linux (or BitWig?)English
5·9 months agoI’ve not tried getting Ableton working on Linux, but I’ve done a bit of audio production in Debian & Arch in the past. It’s gotten much better over the years, but it’s often not plug-and-play. Some suggestions from someone haunted by JACK and ALSA:
- Wine is a rabbit hole. If you’re fine with hacky DIY stuff (and, hey, it’s fun), go for it. However, your results will vary wildly depending on your hardware, software version, etc. In many cases you’ll have to be content with being several versions behind. In any case, it’s usually a frustrating experience.
- Reaper is a solid DAW and now offers a Linux build. Highly recommended. Full-featured indefinite trial, but the license is only $60.
- Ubuntu Studio is designed for audio/video production, and has audio drivers wired up. Great place to start, too.
If you’re stuck on Ableton, you might find some info on getting it to run properly through Wine via the forums on Lutris or PlayOnLinux.

I got $1 says they gained access by whaling one of the execs.

Linux@programming.dev•Asahi Linux Lead Developer Steps DownEnglish
73·1 year agoSatisfied, I am now stepping away from the Apple ecosystem. My friends in the Asahi Linux orbit will carry the torch from here.
This whole project is badass. Well done.

Nice to see a corporation show some fear towards a community project.
Been very happily living in Asahi for the last few weeks. It’s buggy, but totally usable for a daily driver. So usable that I’m tempted to obliterate the macOS partition entirely.
