No weeds in my garden. Kinda how the Teletubbies never dealt with crabgrass.

LordCrom@lemmy.worldto linuxmemes@lemmy.world•I didn't know you were supposed to disable root user...12·3 months agoIf it’s public facing, how about dont turn on ssh to the public, open it to select ips or ranges. Use a non standard port, use a cert or even a radius with TOTP like privacyIdea. How about a port knocker to open the non standard port as well. Autoban to lock out source ips.
That’s just off the top of my head.
There’s a lot you can do to harden a host.
LordCrom@lemmy.worldto linuxmemes@lemmy.world•I didn't know you were supposed to disable root user...17·3 months agoThere’s a 40 year I.T. veteran here that still suffers imposter syndrome. It’s a real thing I’ve never been able to shake off
Pop Os is nice. I went and bought the same hardware that system76 uses and then loaded their popOs on it. Going on 4 years of use now, zero issues. Battery life is challenging… Solid laptop otherwise.
Cats in the cradle, has no one said this one 😭 😭 😭

LordCrom@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's a handy terminal command you use often?1·8 months agoTry mtr . It’ll run kinda like a trace route but will show you where the delay is happening. Still relys in icmp not being blocked
It’s great. We already set it up and worked without issues
LordCrom@lemmy.worldto linuxmemes@lemmy.world•type the distro you use and is and let your keyboard finish it3·8 months agoPopOS I have to be at the bar and I will have a little early and then I’ll get you some food for the day off the road to get the title and I can come by.
LordCrom@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What stupidly easy tech solution do people gloss over all of the time?3·9 months agoYoutube has helped me save on so many home repairs. 400 service calls become a 30 part and an afternoon of taking the dryer apart with video guides.
LordCrom@lemmy.worldto Linux@lemmy.ml•To Linux admins: What certifications/degrees do you guys have?6·9 months agoI’m a self taught child of the 80s that loved to mess around with basic and serial modems when I could finally get 1.
Honestly, I got my first job by low balling the salary and knowing my shit enough to answer questions.
After 1 year I went to a new position paying double. And so on and so forth.
LordCrom@lemmy.worldto Linux@lemmy.ml•Question: If windows is required, what distro do you recommend?1·10 months agoI always go for Linux desktop at a job. Office 365 runs just fine in a browser. Not ideal, but MS will never give up teams to a Linux Installer again. They took down the 1 they had which wasn’t great but still worked
LordCrom@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's the cheapest thing you had bought that by the end of its usefulness made you say "wow, this was worth a lot more than what I've paid for!"4·10 months agoI bought a RoboGrip, self adjusting wrench, maybe 35 years ago a a Sears iirc. One of the best tools I ever brought and still going strong.
Thunderbird. Hate the redesign. If it ain’t broke dont fix it.
K9 for phone
I still have pgp signs, but no one has used it to encrypt back to me in years. Don’t know why I keep those on there and active
I want to add 1 thing…graphics drivers have come a long way. Nvidia is a good example where some diatros come pre loaded to support Nvidia…like popOS. Check your vid card for distro compatibility
