Yep, takes a moment to wrap your head around but the longer you read linux/unix documentation, the more it makes sense why it is the case.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is it possible to have a public forum without moderators?
22·1 month agoThat’s called 4chan. You can make a version of 4chan on the fediverse but good luck keeping your hosting providers happy when the content stored becomes more and more vile (just read their wikipedia page to find out their troubles with that)
Yet another secret? The best “gaming headphones” are just standard audio gear or music studio stuff.
Things like Noctua fans and motherboards aimed at enterprise use cases tend to not have the shiny distractions that average tech bros want.
You probably want to stick with ATX over rack mounted stuff as an individual, just means you have to search for function-over-form brands for peripherals and the motherboard.

43·2 months agoAnna’s Archive does have guides for all of that (apart from the legal advice) on their site (use wikipedia to find the right domain).
I don’t think you’d want to do so as a university student unless you want to share the same fate as Aaron Swartz though.

You don’t need to hoard everything. You can go around and look as your tastes develop, that’s part of being human after all.
This is what the fediverse needs more of :)

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•A rare steam gift cards are still in the wild
81·3 months agoThe retail pre-paid debit cards can be bought with cash at various convenience stores, at least in the US. Growing up I used to use them before I had a bank account.
There is no name attached. Just the payment method at initial purchase (which can be done with cash).

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•A rare steam gift cards are still in the wild
104·3 months agoMy lemming on the internet, prepaid debit cards have been a thing for multiple decades and are perfect for anonymous purchases online at any storefront. You don’t need explicitly Valve-endorsed cards.
Tbf, I believe CachyOS has taken the reigns of “Arch based gaming distro that doesn’t have immutable OS restrictions”, so that’d probably the easiest solution for that.
On the slackware note though, my uncle still uses it. He was a former chip designer at IBM and Intel, and got on the linux for privacy bandwagon long enough ago to show me the ropes of linux as I was growing up.
As a youngblood I have heard of the iron stability of Debian, but simply find it difficult to adopt for gaming-related reasons (both hosting and as a game client).
I do wish to one day study the greybeards’ work for a future project box, however. That knowledge needs to be part of my generation as well, for at least a few of us.
The only reason I have ubuntu on my home server is because apparently Pterodactyl Panel is reliant on some aspects of it vs. Mint. It’s frustrating that way.
GNOME (by default), Snaps forced on you OOB rather than being an optional thing during setup or in any of the GUI settings, locking newer security updates behind a subscription, and Cannonical just being a bad captain of the ship.
There’s a reason why Mint is hailed as the new “casual (non-gaming) user favorite”, since it’s literally just Ubuntu sans GNOME and the hostile update design decisions.

8·3 months agoOf course, and I’m not knocking the FEX project. I’m just pointing out that there is no native solution to running programs built for other hardware architectures (other than a port adapted from source).
The PS3’s CELL is just so egregiously unique that it has a massive emulation overhead compared to ARM or any other more common/simple hardware architecture - less understood overall, and less understood in how it can be translated to x86 compared to ARM->x86.

No, not at the current moment. Hypothetically someone could set up an array of anonymous Youtube accounts to use explicitly for authentication challenges similar to how Aurora handles Google Play Store downloads, but currently that service doesn’t exist for Youtube.
You would need to find an anonymous google account, or create a burner.
