Given that Google generated more than 250 billion U.S. dollars in ad revenue in 2024, I’d say they must be pretty effective.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Looking for a movie about a guy who gets their brian transfered to this like construction worker thing. I can't remember the name.
6·5 months agoThat brian typo really gave me a chuckle. Hope you found the movie you were looking for.
Wikipedia states the UI layer is propriertary, is that true?
A review from earlier this year didn’t sound too bad.
Edit: as pointed out, the review seems to be about the previous version of the phone.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Gnome's new video player, Showtime, gets merged into the main branch. The new video player will replace Totem on Gnome 49.
6·10 months agoDoesn’t feel gnomey enough.
TuxedoOS because my so-called “Linux-Laptop” turned out to not run mainline Linux very smoothly. But I hate that fact that it’s Ubuntu-based.
I’d use Debian, Arch or dabble with Void if I could on my laptop, my servers run Debian or Alma.
I must say I’m not 100% happy with my InfinityBook Pro 14 Gen 9 AMD. The build quality has very much improved since the Gen 7 (which I daily-drove before), but it feels like Tuxedo’s take on “Linux Laptop” is rather something like “Tuxedo-OS Laptop”. On Fedora I had to tweak kernel params so my laptop doesn’t wake up from sleep on its own and do the same to resolve an audio issue, and my RJ45 port just simply doesn’t work even with their drivers.
And something inside the device makes a quiet but annoying beep-like noise when the fans don’t spin.
Apart from that I love the device, but if you plan to use your own distro of choice and really want a high-quality build I’d not really recommend it.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Which distro would you install on a celeron 2gb ram laptop for a lay person to use?
2·1 year agoI recently had to use a friend’s old 4gb macbook for some weeks because my laptop was stolen. I was surprised how well everything worked, even when using a few web apps in firefox. I think with using zram and avoiding web / electron apps where possible, you might get quite something out of a 4gb machine.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Podman 5.3 released with changes for improved networking experience with pasta
8·1 year agoTake a look at the
podman kube playcommand which lets you run K8s-style stack definitions on podman. Has partly replaced compose for me (although I still have some docker servers running for stacks that don’t play nicely with podman yet).
Probably not what OP is looking for.
But I’m also happy with my Garmin Instinct. I use it disconnected from my phone, it does everything I need offline and stand-alone. To add tracks for navigation I just connect it to my linux laptop and drop the GPX file into the NewFiles (or whatever it’s called) folder on the watch. I was surprised how well it works without official apps. The only thing I used the app for was to update the firmware when I bought the watch.
Also, fittrackee looks promising - thanks for the tip!
I would second that. I currently use nix besides Flatpaks for development environments but also find it somewhat overcomplicated. Looking forward to give toolbx a try.

Linux@lemmy.ml•What's the best light desktop env to install in a Linux distro?
3·2 years agoDoes not answer your question, and someone already mentioned it in a thread, but don’t forget zram when only 4GBs are available.
I went to a small (~30 people) festival dedicated to wood carving, because I was asked if a wanted to cook for everyone. Found it very inspiring to get an impression of that very specific sub culture.

482·2 years agoI totally agree regarding making it optional, but I have to say the idea of auto generating alt texts sounds like a really useful application of AI - no one really likes to do that manually yet a significant number of beautiful people rely on it.
Exactly this. Since it does not seem to be federated, you’re still forced to give your data to a third party you can’t choose. And this makes the open source aspect a rather marginal benefit, at least for the privacy-concerned end user. Still, I appreaciate the effort.
