Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Has anyone pirated their internet?English
8·1 year agoKind of I guess. Didn’t have home internet so I would park my car in a home depot parking lot with a laptop torrenting off the public wifi and then walk the rest of the way to work.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Is Linux compatible with touchscreen/2 in 1 laptops?English
5·1 year agoYoga 11e here. Fedora (Plasma Edition) worked perfect right out of the box.
Every GOG game I’ve installed on Linux (Fedora 41 via Heroic) said “Not compatible with linux”. Every one so far has worked without a hitch. I think it’s just a disclaimer to prevent unnecessary refunds.
I would refer more to https://www.protondb.com/ when checking if a game is linux compatible.
I like these. You sold me on Art of Rally. I’ve been looking at it for a while.
Edit: I guess I should have finished checking out before posting. Sales off :(

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Canadians cancelling their American-owned Netflix subscriptions likeEnglish
8·1 year agoThere’s a little bit in this Wikipedia article but I can’t find much either.
IIRC it mostly stemmed from a lot of US tv channels not being available in Canada at the time. So to make them available, they started hacking satellite descramblers and Direct TV cards. Then they found a giant market in the US willing to buy these boxes and cards to get free tv.
There were people in the US making them too, but the Canadian stuff was more reliable and updated quicker when Direct TV changed codes.

35·1 year agoCanadians were some of the OG tv pirates. They were the hookup for hacked satellite boxes in the 90’s.
I dumped Mint for Fedora over upgrade issues. No ragrets.

Technology@beehaw.org•Former LA Dodgers Owner Frank McCourt Reveals Plans to Buy TikTokEnglish
8·2 years agoThat would make more sense. These are all incomprehensible sums of money to me anyways.
But after a second read it kind of sounds like he’s trying to “invent” the fediverse,
The proposed system would work similarly to email, where users can communicate across different service providers. In this vision, social media users could maintain their connections and content regardless of which platform they choose to use.

Here and there for nearly 30 years. They’re my go-to for specific electronic components that I can trust not to be fakes. And when I was a poor college kid they were extremely generous with free product samples. Sometimes their shipping times suck, but that’s really the only bad thing I have to say about them.
They are a gigantic company tho; This is probably an inventory screwup. Or some products are restricted where they can ship.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•just found a flea on our cat, do we go full nuclear?English
6·2 years agoI’d go by the vet and pick up some NexGard for kitty and vacuum any rugs/carpet/pet sleeping areas periodically for the next week or two.
Even when I took in a foster that got the house infested, that took care of it.
Edit: Fixed NexGard spelling.
How much different is setting up immutable distros like Bazzite? I like the concept but I’ve been too intimidated to try it out.

Use someone else’s wifi.
I used to park my car in a Home Depot parking lot when I went to work with a laptop torrenting until the battery died.
