  • I appreciate that. I have a partner who is on the spectrum and has ADHD as well.

I was only joking in the pedantic style often associated (rightly or wrongly) with autistic traits. ASD is the official DSM-5 term. Of course being a diagnostic manual, that focuses only on behavioral deficits. As I understand, the DSM gets plenty of criticism because like you mention, it omits all the interesting ways folks cope or even creatively use abilities like hyperfocus for positive outcomes. But on the other hand, I’m not sure successful behavior requires any psychological treatment, so that may be unnecessary to include in the first place.

Anyway, I think this is one of many situations where simple terminology doesn’t capture the full nuance of reality. So apologies if that came across as crude.

Windows 7 Ultimate for me. I still kept it as a boot option on my main PC until about a year ago because I thought I still needed it for a couple windows apps and games.

I tried Win8 at one point and hated the changes. I also tried Win10 and one of those “forced bloody updates” bricked my machine so I said ‘fuck that’ for good.

I’ve dabbled in Linux for 20 years, and run Ubuntu on my living room HTPC for at least a dozen. My main PC runs EndeavourOS now and even gaming has been pretty great.

  • Endeavour has basically all the pros of Arch without the challenges. Most times I just want to do some gaming with minimal fuss so for me it’s perfect. I can still tinker when I want to.

I think they’ve standardized on KDE Plasma and Wayland (though I still recommend X11 for stability) as the default but last I knew they offered current builds for almost every DE, which again just saves hassle if you prefer another.

I used Manjaro previously but it seemed too disconnected from Arch / the AUR, so it felt like a crapshoot on whether certain package versions would work or whether the Arch wiki was relevant.

  • Oh I won’t dispute that. I have a close friend in the graphics and video field where Adobe CC is indispensable.

But that’s not what I do. For anything I need to edit, GIMP and Pixlr are more than sufficient.

My joke was that in the old days of tech forums, I feel like there was almost a kneejerk reaction among the GNU/Linux diehards to ditch closed source at any cost, and if you didn’t you weren’t worth their time or compassion (like the sharks in the comic here).

Also, I’m not sure the comparison is entirely fair because I kinda doubt the budget and manpower behind GIMP are even in the same galaxy as Photoshop.
