Certainly a worthwhile endeavour. But I’d recommend doing it in a VM or a secondary machine before jumping right in on your main computer.
A cheap mini PC with Linux and Steam Link is the best solution IMO. You could probably get something usable for $100 on eBay.

But not as powerful as the average gaming PC. If you take a mini ITX board, an every level Ryzen processor and something like an RX 7700 that would make a pretty cool system. If you manage to sell that for under $600, you have a winner.
