My mom is, it didn’t pass down to me or my brother. I suspect she was born left handed (that did pass down to me), and it was "corrected"out of her, now she’s equally klutzy (read not at all a klutz) with either hand.

One of my recent work places actually had 1:1 left to right handed people, in a group of 12, there was even one guy who insisted on using the mouse with his left hand (we shared a couple different terminals and you could tell when he was the most recent one to use it). That man was a monster.

Yet still people will find reason to complain.

80% of my catalog is platinum and gold, 20% I probably wasn’t going to play anyways.

My library is plenty large enough and it’s 80%+ gold verified on protondb, and I’ve found success in running titles that were unverified (but not borked, I’ve never tried any of the dozen or so borked games in my library).

Disgaea 4 runs flawlessly without any modification on my deck, it does take a moment to start, I believe that is when it’s trying to connect to the online servers which I have entirely disabled through the in game options menu.

I won’t attest to anything outside of steam, because I didn’t buy a laptop or a console, I bought a steam deck. And I have more than a thousand games ready to go on it.

Edit to add: not sure where you pulled “universal compatability” from, I never mentioned that at all. Contrary to that statement all of the games I mentioned, and everything I’ve ever tried playing, are titles activated through steam.

I jumped on ordering mine working 30 minutes of its announcement, I waited 7 months to get it, and I’ve used it probably 60% of the days since I’ve had it. I still use the laptop some times (especially when my wife has it for some games, and I bought my mom one of her own so she wouldn’t be using mine constantly when she came to visit)

There has been 1 game I’ve tried to play that hasn’t worked, people say it does, but there are 2 versions of the game (square enix, final fantasy 8) and I have the older version, for some reason no control input is sent to it no matter what I do. I’m sure if I bought the new version it would work fine, but I’m done with that company after they bricked my phone copy of ff6 (even though the phone didn’t change at all) and told me “if I want to continue playing you need to buy the new version”. I’m sad they seem to be doing the same thing with all their old games.

That rant out of the way.

I have 1400 games in my steam library, the above is the only one I’ve wanted to play but haven’t been able to get working.

I highly suggest a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard for first person style games (I’m too old to get used to the “gyro control fine aiming”, but the younger people say it works great.) and 4x games.

I play a lot more 2d platformers and rogue-lite games on the deck than I ever did on a PC/laptop. The controls are fantastic and there’s no input lag like I used to have with a wireless control to my PC.

I’m about to buy a 3rd because my household, and the company we bring over, sometimes use mine when I want to be using it.

Some of the games I’ve played on it: red dead redemption 2, Witcher 3, elder scrolls Skyrim, rim world, dead cells, path of exile, Warhammer total war 2, sid Meier’s civ 5 and 6, subnautica, factorio, satisfactory, monster Hunter frostborn wrath, baldurs gate 3.

It’s actually amazingly good at running the ported PS2/4 and xbox360 games, I was amazed to see 5-6 hours predicted battery life while playing dynasty warriors 8 and Disgaea 4.

I was thinking about getting a new gaming laptop to replace my 5 year old 15" dell, but the deck filled that need perfectly, and at a fraction of the price a new computer would’ve cost.

When I originally bought it (pre ordered the 512 gig) I bought a “leather skin” and screen protector, I’m glad that I did, but I think the skin was going overboard.

If you aren’t a gamer I’m not very sure how much desktop function there is, I’ve only done it once or twice, but I was able to YouTube and Amazon through the browser.

If you get one (and I highly recommend it) I suggest getting a kick stand, a Bluetooth mouse and a Bluetooth keyboard.

My next investment is going to be a “dock” and a pair of a.r. glasses so I can charge it and use the glasses as a monitor and lay in bed and game until mold grows over me.

Edit to add: I’ve actually found a couple newer games that developers have decided my laptop is “too out of date” to run, but will run just fine on the deck, so there’s that!

I would much rather do x-rays at home with an app or something, than have to go to the hospital to get them done.

Do you watch a lot of v-sauce? There’s a certain argumentative style that he instills in his audience that I’m picking up when reading your comments. There’s a lot of nuance and acceptability outside of the strict definitions that goes into the scientific process (as much as strict adherents don’t like it, science is done when we close those gaps, it isn’t immediate nor absolute)

In biology mitochondria are not essential, hydrocarbons are. Life sprung up without mitochondria, but it wouldn’t be what it is without them. Chemistry is fundamental to biology, mitochondria aren’t, but I think you’d agree physics wouldn’t be what it is today without mass, nor would biology be without the mitochondria

Can you live without your lungs? Maybe stomach is a tiny bit more appropriate, I guess you could if you had something pumping nutrients into your body, and taking away the waste, but you’d be on life support for the rest of your days.

ATP, what the mitochondria is there to produce, is used for almost every action in the cell (not used in passive transport and some enzymatics, maybe other stuff, it’s been 20 years since I studied cellular bio), and ADP is leftover that needs to be resynthesized into ATP. I guess life could’ve developed an alternative way to synthesize it, but the mitochondria is so good at it that it was never needed.

Okay, as a biologist it really upsets me how that phrase is written off. I did an impromptu half hour lecture for my wife about how significant “the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell” is,

The mitochondria is what ties everything on this planet together, it’s the one thing that ties all life together, it is the exact same mechanism in plants as it is in animals, it takes the same ingredients and does the same function, and comes from the same origin.

There is no chain in our DNA that codes for the mitochondria, it exists outside of our DNA, it has no relationship with our DNA, it only fuels reading DNA and it’s decoding and replication, but it isn’t included in our genetics. It replicates itself, it exists as a separate entity, and it acts as the functioning unit for all energy within the cell.

It would be like if when a child was born their lungs were provided by an outside source and had the same genetic material as everyone else’s lungs. Oh and puppy lungs, and crab lungs, and avocado lungs, and grass lungs, every single living thing on this plant has the same lung genetic material. And it has no clue that it serves this function, all it knows is ADP goes in, ATP goes out, and ATP is energy that fuels all function of all life.

And it comes from the friggin mitochondria.

Please be impressed with that little hitch hiker, it is the powerhouse that powers your neurons, grows the vegetables you eat, and makes life happen on earth.

How will we know something extraterrestrial comes our way? They’ll have their own mitochondria, because something needs to power their cells, and it won’t be the same as ours.

Writing off the mitochondria from biology is like writing off the exchange of goods in economics, or doing physics without the concept of mass, or art without feeling. There is nothing more basic, more fundamentally important to biology than the existence of the mitochondria, and it’s role as the powerhouse of the cell.

Let me be straight with you guys, televisions are definitely better, cell phones are much better, I don’t think there’s a single (consisting mostly of) electronics (some coffee grinders, maybe some other kitchen appliances) device that existed in the 90s/naughts that I would take over it’s current iteration.

There was a really fun show I found… Let me get the name… “Joe and Katherine bargain holidays”, where they"vacation" on a “budget”, in the first (or second?) episode the go to an owl sanctuary, where they learn it’s 3$ (pounds) to hold an owl, Joe is flabbergasted by this and announces that he’s going to spend more money holding owls than on anything else in this episode, I think they started with 10 owls for 30 pounds, then asked to round it up to a dozen, then a bakers dozen. It actually looked like something I’d gladly spend money to do, and I would imagine it’s a pretty good cause.

The series is posted to YouTube, and if you haven’t seen “task master” I cannot recommend it highly enough. Joe and Katherine are on season 2. Save season 7 until you’ve seen enough of it to be comfortable with what’s going on, because it’s an amazing season (as they all are) but the cast is the least restrained in their antics.
