I fucking love Ubuntu. Have been on it for about 5 years now. It just works AND doesn’t spy or advertise. Nobody has ever been able to convince me it gets better than that. I don’t need stuff to be difficult to prove to myself I’m smart.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's up with this straight up pro-china and pro-russia stuff on Lemmy lately?
1019·6 months agoOk, just in case there’s a chance for you to be good faith. The above comment was a reply to a post about there being a lot of pro china and pro Russia propaganda being on Lemmy. It implied that the only way you can be against china and/or Russia is if you’ve fallen for western propaganda. This is a very clear fallacy, as being critical of china and/or Russia does not imply that you aren’t also critical of the west. There’s no conspiracy going on where everyone agreed to comment the same stuff, but if the same fallacy gets repeated over and over, multiple people will independently see it for what it is and call it out.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why do people wake up in the morning and then sit staring into space for about 20 minutes?
6·6 months agoFor me it’s that when I drink 3L of water over the course of 16h, the dehydration after 8 hours of not drinking is such a stark difference that it’s uncomfortable.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Do you ever wish you weren't diagnosed with something?
5·9 months agoThe psychologist who did like a shortened test on me actually recommended against going further and also getting diagnosed by a psychiatrist if I don’t want any official support. Just not worth a lifetime of discrimination within the medical system. I’m noticing it happening with my ADHD diagnosis. That one’s worth the discrimination though, since the treatment is a life saver (potentially literally).
I mean, it’s not just herd mentality. I’m just not willing to lock myself out of relationships because of my principles. It’s not my fault my mum can’t be convinced to ditch Whatsapp for signal. Not willing to give up communication with her.
Herd mentality would be if you did a thing because others do it even if there wouldn’t be any loss from switching to a better thing. It’s more complex if you’d lose out a great deal from the switch.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•DAE feel like DuckDuckGo is now just as good as google for the vast majority of searches?
3·11 months agoIt’s not as good as google was when I was first allowed to use the internet 15+ years ago, but much better than today’s google. Just so much more peace of mind to know that profit isn’t what governs my search results.
That’s the first time I’m hearing this experience, thanks for the input! Changed my mind
While that’s true, there are objectively different levels of ‘just working’ though.
I’ve never spent so little time googling how to fix things as I do with Ubuntu or Mint. It’s much more frequently needed and time consuming on other Linux OSs, iOS, Windows, Android. Haven’t personally used Mac.
Also, I’ve always found a fix on Ubuntu. The same can’t be said for other OSs.
That’s just personal examples, but the general idea still stands: different systems have a different amount of bugs, (or worse, ‘features’) and the difficulty of fixing them isn’t the same for everything either.
I can’t find anything that matches your description of US can openers on DDG, do you happen to have a pic? Can’t picture it

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are you surprised that people pay for, when there are free alternatives in existence?
61·1 year agoIt didn’t say that. I said the opposite: you can’t be sure it’s ethical when it’s free, because it’s much less transparent then.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are you surprised that people pay for, when there are free alternatives in existence?
174·1 year agoIf you want to be reasonably certain it’s ethically made, you kind of have to pay for porn.
Edit: also, if you want something specific that free sites don’t cater to. Like lesbian porn that isn’t obviously only meant to appeal to men.
Ugh same. I’ve tried to reduce screen time a few times but it inevitably leads to more skin picking/nail biting.
I’ve always been shit at being idle. There’s so many other activities I’ve been suggested to try instead but none have worked (usually either because of adhd or the chronic tendinitis in my wrist).

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is Lemmy your "main social media app"? If not, which one is it?
7·1 year agoIkr? I have to use YouTube a specific way. I’ll go to a channel and go to the tab that just lists the videos chronologically. I’ll go back there if I want a second video. The only way I find new creators I enjoy watching is through recommendation/someone sending a link to a group chat. Shame really, I bet there’s plenty of content out there that I’d enjoy, but I can’t handle the algorithm.
I think the Facebook thing is because it was more or less the first social media that pretty much everyone was on. Everything before was a little more niche. But back in, like, 2010, it felt like you were missing out if you weren’t on FB. At least that’s my experience/guess (I’m 27 and in middle Europe).

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is Lemmy your "main social media app"? If not, which one is it?
351·1 year agoLemmy is the only one I’ll log onto and the only one I have as an app.
Sometimes though, I’ll miss a super specific community from the place spez ruined, and scroll through it in DuckDuckGo browser.
Anything that has an intransparent, engagement driving, ad laden algorithm that determines what you do and don’t see is thoroughly unappealing to me. At least now that I’m a little more tech savvy and anti-corporate.
I guess I do technically have a Facebook account still because I don’t remember the password of either that account or the associated email address. I used that for local flea market and food sharing groups up until maybe 6 years ago.
