The sad part is that Trumps base will see this and writhe with glee. They’ve been spoon fed American Exceptionalism so long, they can’t understand that there were reasons for our success that aren’t “we’re great” or “foreigners are dumb”. Since they consider Europeans second rate and everyone else trash, they’ll take this as a win while utterly oblivious to the way it accelerates Americas decline.
With both major US political parties moving Rightward over the last couple decades, it makes sense that Democrats would want to pick up people left behind by Republicans but doing so threatens to lose them any remaining connection to anyone on the Left or progressives. Dems delayed this from happening for years by being “the lesser of two evils” but it could only ever be a temporary strategy and now people are getting numb to it.
