  • Came here to say exactly this tbh. Apply analytical math to Earth sphere and discover 2 opposite hemispheres rotating in opposite directions - equal to a ZERO value existence. In other words, 4 Earth Quadrants simultaneously rotate inside 4 Time Cube Quarters to create 4 - 24 hour days within one Earth rotation.

  • Finally got around to watching (half), and she does explain it and gets into some real interesting technical stuff, so I judged too soon.

I think she’s doing herself a disservice by opening with the dramatic reenactment though, because I bounced off on that, also on an earlier video. There’s not really a gradual buildup either, so someone who actually likes the drama will get a cold blast of RAM spec sheet right after and likely stop there. Better to let everyone know what they’re getting into at the start, right?

  • The title is objectively clickbait though, even if she does eventually explain the design flaw. But I think if she’s doing an hour on the history of RAM design, she could be honest about that.

This is probably a matter of taste, but I can’t sit through 58 minutes of slow buildup just to get to “ram has to refresh, that takes 300 nanoseconds sometimes, you could eliminate that at the hardware level by making all ram twice as expensive”

Thanks Laurie, but you don’t have to pretend all ram is fundamentally broken to make me watch an hour of maths and engineering. 3blue1brown does that all the time with titles like “What is a laplace transform?” and thumbnails of plain formulas on black backgrounds.

  • Can someone explain Laurie Wired to me? I see her in my recommendations sometimes, but I don’t click obvious clickbait.

Take this one, is it actually a design flaw or is it just a compromise that was made for good reasons and is kept around for those same reasons?

Maybe I’ll watch the video and report back, can always remove it from my watch history.

Edit: It’s an hour? Not like I won’t watch hour-long videos, but that’s a lot to figure out if it was clickbait or not.

  • There’s one more big difference between Windows and Linux: Windows can only install updates while shutting down, for some reason. On Linux I boot the machine, see the notification for updates, and run them in the background while I do my own things. If the updates need a reboot to take effect, it’s a normal reboot that takes mere seconds.

On Windows, I get an update notification in the morning and either take 5 minutes to restart right then, or wait until I naturally shut down (end of the day) and have an abnormally long shutdown that (sometimes) leaves my laptop running and still not fully updated while it’s in my bag. That isn’t a security issue or a policy issue, it’s a technical limitation that results in a terrible user experience.

  • I find it really easy to tell the difference between a human being polite, neat and well-spoken, and an AI being the same (but soulless). I don’t know if I could put it into words though, there’s just something about AI that lacks subjectivity? A human would phrase something in a certain way and stick with it, because that’s the way they experience it, while the AI takes a phrasing at random, only caring about gaining lexical and grammatical points.

I also think humans overestimate their ability to write clearly and correctly. There’s always some noise in there, even if they’re going full corpo-speak. Unless it’s written-by-committee meaningless corpo, but then I don’t even read it beyond the first sentence. It’s very obvious when someone has tried to strip all meaning from a sentence and the result is not far from AI.

  • California-based rightsholder PCR Distributing, which operates under brands including J18 and JAST USA, initiated action against nHentai last summer, describing the site as a significant threat to its business.

I don’t know them, but JAST sells visual novels and other software (so no hentai) and J18 is a Halland-class destroyer of the Swedish Navy, so maybe they’re being threatened by the amount of KanColle doujins showing the superior physical assets of Japanese warships.
