  • You probably know most of it so just some advice: Don’t format the Partition table (MBR to GPT etc.) on the disk whose data you wish to keep.

Shrinking a partition or moving it carries a small risk of data loss and will take significantly longer than creating a new partition (since data needs to be cut and pasted from one area of the disk to another). If your old laptop has an empty slot for another SSD or NVME drive you can plug that in, and still dualboot and having the new drive Linux only.

Also to deal with the occasional Windows cockups, just carry a boot-repair USB, the auto repair has fixed the Windows issue for me 90% of the time (the other times are usually boot order priority or other BIOS setting)

  • Compared to other national and international chains, I’ll pick Dominos. Here in Vancouver there are just so many local pizza shops and smaller chains to choose from, even the cheaper/quantity over quality chains taste better than both Pizza Hut and Domino’s (I’m thinking Freshslice for the Western Canadians in the room). Even corporate pizza events here don’t go with Domino’s, which was the go to when I was elsewhere.

  • I found a solution today using Fcitx, the clipboard addon, and the default shortcut Ctrl+semicolon. However, it works more like a history that pushes each older item down, rather than 10 separately accessible boxes. It seems as though it will work with the use case you described.

Note: I have no idea how well Fcitx is supported in Wayland.

  • Rentlar@lemmy.catoLinux@lemmy.mlHow do you use Wine/Proton?

For Steam games, it’s simply a matter of checking the “Enable Steam Play for all Other Titles”, and you’re all set. Depending on your library, 50-80% will work with no discernable difference, besides maybe a slightly longer download and open time. Check out protondb.com which will give you an idea of how many you can expect to work at least somewhat, including using your own Steam public profile if you wish.

Some games will need a couple small tweaks, ie a specific Proton version to manually copy in, a game setting like Borderless Window, or worst case a few terminal commands but they are set and forget in every instance I’ve encountered. Protondb has comments of others who will share their experience and sometimes how they got something to run well if it doesn’t out of the box.

Non-Steam games also work. Lutris is the easiest way to set it up, but it can be done manually too. Both wine and proton will work, let me know if you want a tutorial for manual set up but it’s too long for one comment.

    Now for issues:

Drivers are okay for most general stuff (mic, headset, mice, keyboards, gamepads), specialized stuff requiring proprietary drivers is a crapshoot. I’ve a 2nd hand DAC I can’t use on Linux for Rocksmith.

Games that will not work and likely will never rely on invasive anticheat. So it’s a waste of time to try and run Rainbow 6 Siege, Fortnite, Valorant or League of Legends. Without the anticheat the games could run perfectly fine.

  • Quirky is definitely the best fit, if you are worried about an ambiguous context using a descriptor.

Still, don’t discard weird as a word altogether like a slur so quickly. “Keep Portland Weird”, “Weird Al Yankovic”, still describes stuff that are a little unusual but cool to be around, and the fact that this word comes up in the context of US politics shouldn’t remove one of the word’s many meanings.

A guy at a bar who always shows up with round sunglasses and a tie dye shirt, ordering a glass of milk is the cool kind of weird. A guy who spends all their time talking about themselves are the annoying antisocial kind of weird. Someone who sits next to a washroom staring at the ass of every person going in and out of it is the creep kind of weird.

  • He’s a YouTube personality who makes clickbait videos, does random stunts using millions of dollars at a time, and now has a candy bar offering.

If there is a Mr. Beast thumbnail that catches your interest, usually the last 2 minutes of the video has anything worth watching. The rest is fluff and sponsorships and BS worse than reality-TV.
