I’ve got a couple busted laptops and some loose memory floating around, I just need to find one of my working hdds.

Technically I have an extra one but it’s acting as my media drive right now and I don’t even have a backup of it…

I definitely want to make the switch BEFORE my current setup dies, since it’ll be easier to transfer/convert everything I can.

Okay look, when my current drive fails I’m never EVER reinstalling Microsoft,cand I’m not getting another Microsoft computer. Macos was never even an option…

So One Day™ I will chomp down hard on that cracker…

I even broke out my old laptops to see if I could salvage an hdd to give current laptop (with space for an extra hard drive) a separate (if smaller) Linux drive.

Sadly all 3 were unusable, they literally freeze everything that tries to access them…

Personally I’m a huge fan of bouncing a ball off a couple of sticks, but you like what you like, eh?

I mean, half of my hammers have had their handles remade with whatever hardwood was closest. So I’m gonna go with those.

However, the most complex thing that I can repair with sourced parts would be either my truck, or my truck. I’ve had to fix it with “close enough” parts before, and I will fix it until the frame rusts (which given Northern states and salted roads probably won’t be more than a few more years)

There’s a smattering of electronics that I’ve seen mentioned multiple times as well.

One thing that is theoretically repairable, but is hard to find parts for, my washing machine. It’s a old 50s model with a lever to engage the motor, a roller on top to squeeze water out, and a simple steel gear system to drive everything. I should be able to open it up with a crescent wrench and flat head screwdriver, but I doubt I will ever be able to find ready-made parts (I have looked briefly when I thought I had a problem with it that sorted itself) but I might be able to bodge some things together if needed.

Ah. Well that’s a relief, I removed foxit, and never had anything Adobe.

I open the pdfs in inkscape to pull the vector files and save them as an svg. There’s probably a simpler way, but this allows me to open the vector in a lot more programs like my laser software and my CAD programs.

The only pdfs that get printed like a normal person are small rc planes and the files are from trusted sources.

It’s nice to know I can do a little extra to protect myself from pdf based attacks though, thanks for the info!

Any questionable software I have is coming up on 4 years old now, most of it is older than that. I move them to a new machine every time I upgrade, simply because I don’t trust torrents anymore.

Honestly, I don’t trust PDFs anymore unless they’re from places I know are “safe” which kind of sucks because I’ve been getting back into RC as a hobby and it’s hard to find non-pdf plans. I prefer vector files, but I’m having to try my luck with jpg and png files.

A lot of the programs I used to use have been surpassed by current FOSS projects, and I’ve been replacing them as I can. Finding an open source laser engraver program that isn’t shit is proving difficult.

Beware that Nvidia cards have driver issues, they’re fixable but if you do have an Nvidia card, I’d just use the built in graphics chip for trying out Linux at first.

I know just enough about Linux to know I should have been getting into it when I graduated over a decade ago.

I also know just enough to know it can do pretty much everything I need, as long as I’m willing to switch to a Linux alternative with similar capabilities.

However, I am Linux-dumb and deeply set into my windows, to the point where I’m not sure I have the technical savvy to switch.

From my understanding, Linux works very well, as long as you know what you’re doing.

I’m sure I’m overestimating the learning curve but it’s still intimidating.

/uj oh my god I have ptsd from the one time my parents tried to switch to apple products. It lasted less than a week. Please don’t let them decide to switch to Linux and ask me things.

The last time I used skype, it was to monitor my 3d print because I needed to finish a project and my last attempt went all spaghetti.

So as I was at work I’d log into my computer from my phone, call myself with skype, and check to make sure everything was still okay.

Then I discovered octoprint.

They stated they didn’t break piracy laws because they downloaded a shitload of books for their LLM and didn’t seed any.

Torrents are downloaded by “leeches” and put out for download by “seeders”

A proper ratio of what you downloaded to what you allow others to download should be 1:1 if you’re not a dick. (1gb downloaded means you need to upload 1gb to other users for 1:1) but if you don’t seed at ALL or if you only seed bare minimum to keep downloading things, you’re called a Leech, and derogatorily. Because you didn’t seed.

So they’re stating “we didn’t break the law, we’re just leeches!”
