linuxmemes@lemmy.world•I'm looking for a free OS, should it be Debian or Arch Linux(community)?English
14·5 months agoDebian is chosen for Satellites because it is “stable”, that is it doesn’t do major changes like changing the Kernel.
Arch isn’t for beginners, but it’s a rolling release distro that’s nice and simple but powerful.

44·6 months agoJust sounds like they want to force you to have operating systems that monitor you at every turn.

2·7 months agoKnew someone who dressed in posh trousers, a waistcoat, and a posh shirt and smoked a pipe (outside school, of course).
It’s kinda fun in that sense, like “oh I wanna try this, lemmie see if it’s in the repos and it is” and then it’s a four word command at most.
In my experience, Arch (with pacman at least) is like clipping lego bricks together. Like “Oh, a wanna do this? Best get that”.

I installed arch thinking it would be hard but worth it, and then I found out it’s easier than I thought and now I’m having a bit of an existential crisis that I’m finding the “hard” distro to be easy.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Do you use Arch btw? Best Arch distro?English
6·9 months agoI use plain Arch, but if you are just gonna use it as a media center, use Debian or something like it. A media center doesn’t need to be up to date if you’re just using it for TV and retro gaming. However, how mediocre are we talking? Are you intending to run full steam games or are you planning on streaming them from another computer?
If the latter, I think Debian or even a healthy rPi running RetroPie might be up your alley because you can install Kodi and SteamLink on that.
