Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How many of you started using this site after being banned or shadowbanned from reddit
2·2 months agoYa know, some people actually only get on social media for curated news, to have actual conversations with other humans, or to share or seek advice about specific topics.
I spend most my time in tech, old home remodel, and local/hometown forums.

Linux@programming.dev•Apple Reacts to the Framework Pro (video)
41·4 months agoWell, it looks fine for web browsing.
Specs sure read like my 2010 PC. If that works for ya, cool … I ain’t even looking at the price though. I’d just as soon plug in my 2004 laptop that’s still running fine on XP & an old version of Ubuntu.

Linux@programming.dev•Apple Reacts to the Framework Pro (video)
62·4 months agoInteresting, but there’s no evidence they are nazi themselves, just that they intentionally disregard whether any of their partners are nazis, and only concern themselves with whether or not any partnership furthers their goal of promoting open source tech.
So their focus is just limited and immature.
They themselves can still do a lot of good, orgs don’t need to be perfect, but I too would expect them to remove support for extremist led project when made aware, as to ensure they weren’t inadvertently supporting extremist views and actions. But I also can’t see punishing them for being politically or socially stupid while otherwise being very tech savvy.
Like we’ve never met a socially awkward tech savvy person before?
The world is mostly a bunch of grey areas: at this point I disapprove of a couple of their actions, but I won’t boycott them outright for their error.
If they started flying nazi flags themselves, well, then, I suppose things would be a bit different.

Technology@beehaw.org•Start with the sensors, then design the rest: How Zoox built its robotaxi
6·4 months ago"The name “Zoox” is a reference to Zooxanthellae, a marine organism that, like the Zoox robotaxi, depends on renewable energy and is able to maintain a symbiotic relationship with organisms in its surrounding habitat.“
Actually kinda cool, but appropriately dumbed down to be usable in modern coversation, “hold on a sec, my Zoox just pulled up.”

Technology@beehaw.org•The OnlyFans inheritance: how its owner’s death could reshape the porn money-making machine
7·5 months agoShe should just donate all the profits going forward, and focus on making sure anything on the platform is legit consensual sex work and not people being forced into it. Not that I think that happens a lot, but she sounds like she’d be up for improving the system to better know for sure, and provide better support and resources for sex workers in general.

12·5 months agoWell, I originally saw both Blair Witch and H20 played from really dark and messy VHS copies of theater recordings… And man, let me tell ya, they were both way better as low quality cams that HD movies!
I intentionally watch bad Horror as cams now, when I can, even decades later… It really adds to the experience!

Linux@programming.dev•Systemd’s New Feature Brings Age Verification Option to Linux
20·5 months agoI like the idea of a system add-on that randomizes all user age responses with a different date that equals like 25-99years old (assuming 25 years meets the highest age for the applicable standards).
Not too dissimilar from a random MAC address generating feature.
SOs HP laptop borked Win11pro OS, wouldn’t load or recover. Tried reinstalling clean but Win11 installer can’t see SSD. Driver loading during install results in install crashing error.
Linux, here we come.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's with users of fediverse using 'Go back to reddit' as a retort to other users?
2·5 months agoShouldn’t ‘tell them off’ at all either.
Teach to the problem. Or moderate it.
Allow the person to continue coexisting.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's with users of fediverse using 'Go back to reddit' as a retort to other users?
2·5 months agoIf you want to invite them to reexamine their behavior… Actually do that, not the other more aggressive, offensive, and immature thing… Then play it off as something more.
‘fuck you!’
‘fuck me?’
‘no, no, that’s not what I meant!’
Just say what you actually meant!

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's with users of fediverse using 'Go back to reddit' as a retort to other users?
34·5 months agoIt’s funny watching this argument.
I’m from a very hippy community.
I’m a collectivist.
I’m extremely far left & progressive.
I’m wholly anti-fascist.
I’m also 100% in agreement with you regarding including differing opinions regardless of how extreme.
Inclusivity only brodens the divide and limits opportunities for people who harbor extremist views to be influenced toward developing more balanced, functional, and beneficial perspectives.
Moderation can be used to soften their influences in our commuty while including them allows our community to influence them.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's with users of fediverse using 'Go back to reddit' as a retort to other users?
51·5 months ago‘You people’ is typically defined by the attached action. ‘You people’ are the people who actually do that thing, whatever it is.
If you don’t do it, ‘you people’ is not you.
If you do do it, ‘you people’ is you.
The point is not about ‘who’, it’s an oppositional statement about the ‘what’, the action, and implies it’s bad, or more importantly that the speaker doesn’t approve.
Like: ‘You people, always with the child raping.’
If you don’t rape children, ‘you people’ isn’t you.
But also, the speaker is implying that child raping is bad, or something they don’t approve of, and something they don’t do.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's with users of fediverse using 'Go back to reddit' as a retort to other users?
41·5 months agoThen you rule them out on those basis, not their general ‘right wing’ classification.
Include everyone, but exclude specific content.
The ‘go away’ or ‘go back’ BS is exclusive, not inclusive, and should be moderated similarly to bigotry.

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Is something happening to TPB?English
7·6 months agoI’ve seen warnings like that when a sites certs expire. Well maintained sites don’t usually let that happen, but I’ve seen it plenty for torrent sites. It’s usually fixed in a few hours or a day.
Like others said, it could also be the ISP, so you can try a VPN, even a free one would probably do, if that was the issue.
You can also try resetting cached data for that site specifically. How to do that is different per browser, search online for more info specific to your browser.

17·6 months agoA non-profit community service.
We need an international digital media co-op library.
Anyone can upload/donate their digitally owned content and share ownership with the community… Or people can pool funds with the community and it can buy digital content as a non-profit co-op with shared ownership and access. Then use private torrents to decentralize data hosting and improve streaming to members.
Imagine Netflix as a non-profit digital library.
Movies, TV shows, eBooks, magazines, and music.
Maybe Cuba would be willing to host it’s main office?

Well, I grew up with knowledge of cable pirating in apartment complexes, VHS recording of retals to share or rewatch or watch later, and tape and CD sharing and mixing…
So as far as Im aware pirating was always a easy, viable, and economically savvy choice.
I did explore Netflix for a brief time 15 years ago, but the quality of their service degraded heavily, and I still pirated alongside my Netflix membership, as their content was always limited. And I shared my member ship with others, then later occasionally used a membership that was shared with me, until Netflix broke that system.
