  • Theres a quote something along the lines of

“I have nothing to hide; I simply don’t trust someone else’s version of justice." When they want to look though my things.

Just because what you do in your home city is right and legal, doesnt mean it is when you travel, when other governments look at you, when other organizations target you. Nothing to hide just means the collective “they” have more on you specifically. Abortions are a perfect example. Get an abortion in a state that supports it, congrats your tried for murder in a state that doesnt. It doesnt matter that you had it in another place.

Also whats legal now is not garenteed to be legal in the future. Your benign photo op 20 years ago can get you in big trouble. Or just shunned (gay marriage in some places).

So yeah, its in your best interest to be annon.

  • A while back Fedora and Nvidia had a war in my desktop. My graphics card kept needing special drivers. And Fedora would do an update, break the drivers and I would have to pop into the command line to fix the issue. It went on for a good 6 months until I just switched distros. And never had the issue again. It was something that sat in an issue tracker for a LONG time from last time I bothered to look.

Fedora was great dont get me wrong, but debian and debian based distros make it so easy I never looked back.

  • I know on some fedi platforms there is software that will auto-track if a user is a bot or not.

EX: https://piefed.social/u/circuitai@lemmy.world is banned already on my home instance.

Users can be explicit and identify their account as a bot. Which is for the good of everyone (auto-tagging bot for example)

The community can also tag a user as a bot and it will show up as an icon. The can get it removed but theres usually a process.
I know theres at least one instance where they have some sort of algorithm set up to help detection.

I know piefed has some of the above if I recall. Different fedi platforms have different ways of combating it. Its interesting…because if a bot owner wants to be successful they have to try combating multiple ways of dealing with filters/algorithms like the above.

Its kinda like the Linux community and viruses. Sure viruses CAN run on linux…its just VERY hard to do so without market share, multiple iterations of the kernel/software, and overall more eyes on the source code. I can go in right now and improve piefed for example and have something out in a week(?)s time.

Overall, its not impossible for bots to come to the fediverse, its just much harder to stay undetected and filtered out if your using niche platforms.

  • I mean we are literally on a couple of open source solutions communicating using an open protocol probably using some sort of open OS.

https://nosystemd.org/ is a thing. I dont have particularly strong opinions on the matter.

You don’t need to do it alone. In fact, people can come by, fix some things, then go about life. Or donate money instead of resources. If you have used lemmy/piefed/mastodon/peertube in the past, theres a tiny bit of my code in there that makes things just a tiny bit better. Thats not a brag or anything, its just that multiple people can contribute.

But I hear the frustrations. There is a certain mindset you have to have, hopeful you and others can build something…or with enough hatred to build out of spite. Sometimes thats hard to do with everything else in life. Sometimes the best thing to do is to accept and move on. Or go looking for new solutions without maintenance.

  • Friends and i have been sharing the same excel doc for years now. It has all the companies we have all applied to and thier respective process. Its helped weed out bad companies in our area for years.

Wr have been talking qbout making an app for years…but its easier to just do a control f or sort. And its been close to 20 years ish. Now its a libre office sheet. Its beem through many iterations.
