  • sure, but if an application “requires” age verification for whatever reason, would you prefer the functional equivalent to clicking “i’m over 18 pinky promise” as a standard, or they use biometric data that they all implement differently and then there’s like 33.7 leaks in the next 6 months?

like the whole thing is bullshit, but a file on disk is a wink wink nudge nudge sure we are compliant bud

the true unix way: if you text editor you own the world

  • what’s not how a model works? i didn’t say anything about how a specific thing works… i simply said that emergent behaviours are real things, and separately that consciousness doesn’t look like a human brain to be consciousness

given we can’t even reliably define it, let alone test for it, if true AGI ever comes along i’m sure there will be plenty of debate about if it “counts”

who knows: consciousness could just be bootstrapping a particular set of self-sustaining loops, which could happen in something that looks like the underlying technology that LLMs are built on

but as i said, i tend to think LLMs are not the path towards that (IMO mostly because language is a very leaky abstraction)

  • to really hammer home this “many ways to hide”: the PDF is kinda just like a container… it contains other things like images (the patterns for example)… these patterns are probably vector graphics (made up of lines rather than pixels)… this means you can magnify them basically infinitely… and they can contain transparent lines and all sorts of things. they could easily embed that same text in the SVG image, at tiny scale (less than a pixel at 100% scale), and make it transparent… no PDF editor is going to touch the image data: it simply doesn’t really understand it to that degree - it’s an image; not a PDF after all… so that information will remain even after you’ve removed all visible/reasonable marks

this is just 1 example of practically infinite places it could be - and remember, this text is just lines in an image! it’s not like you can ctrl+f for the text necessarily… you’d have to go through every image manually and inspect every single line, and even then there are no guarantees (perhaps they encoded that information like morse code in bumps in some lines that are only barely visible at 1000% magnification)

  • perhaps for that particular group… though i had a friend whose old af macbook air had stopped updating literally years ago, and he still used it because it still worked… but then apps slowly stopped working

i installed linux on it, and he was actually really keen to give linux itself a go, and it worked great for him!

i gave him an old macbook a little while after that, and he’s back on macos now, but he said he’d switch back in a heartbeat if there were problems (slowness, update compatibility, etc)

i guess the thing being he’s not really technical enough to care about the OS other than outcomes, but also was actually interested in linux itself to learn for the sake of it… he’s a lab tech, and vibe codes data manipulation tools, so not a lot of IT-related skills, but always interested in learning
