I use the dendritic approach for my NixOS configuration. put everything in individual modules. then I go back and further cut up those modules to be even more specific. It’s gotten so bad I even have modules for almost every individual WM/DE to just turn them on and off within the flake. They’re just so fun to build. it’s addictive. I need help.

man as a NixOS user i’m too busy perfecting my configuration to care about what other users are doing.
It. Is. Never. Perfect.
DOOM Emacs ruined me. I love it.
I assumed the same as you when I tried out the BSDs. I went with FreeBSD first because I assumed that was the better supported one. Wifi was absolutely horrible on it. connection would constantly drop, or was slow, etc. on OpenBSD i haven’t had those issues. Also had a lot of issues setting up a VM on FreeBSD and getting certain USB devices to work correctly. neither of those issues on OpenBSD.
I daily drive OpenBSD. I found it easier to set up than NetBSD which apparently is ass backwards as open is supposed to be harder. for the life of me I just couldn’t wrap my head around getting the amdgpu drivers working on NetBSD.
I also found OpenBSD slightly better supported for various hardware than FreeBSD. Wifi works better on it, these old ass logitech headphones I have work flawlessly on OpenBSD when on FreeBSD they just didn’t work at all and gave off horrible feedback or I couldn’t turn the mic off. Also found setting up a Debian VM much easier on OpenBSD than FreeBSD (still a chore though)
Also OpenBSD for whatever reason probably has the most solid and decently sized gaming community than the other ones.
It’s a great OS that just stays out of your way. really fun to tinker with. Just don’t expect to do EVERYTHING on it. for surfing, certain dev work, etc it’s great.
honestly just installing Gentoo is a great way to learn various aspects of linux. It’s a process, a lengthy one, but if you manage to install it successfully you can pretty much install any distro or BSD with absolute ease and not even think about it.
meanwhile I’m over here making NixOS look like NeXTStep

Linux@programming.dev•KDE is actively proposing a Pro-AI contribution policy, with most rejecting any suggestions for AI use to be disclosed, or any consideration for environmental concernsEnglish
182·21 days agoI hate vibe coding, detest it, i’m tired of it. it wastes time and resources. That being said I use AI for debugging and as a glorified rubber duck. I don’t let it write ANYTHING but I will allow it to review code and make suggestions. Generally, I’d say 8 times out of 10 the suggestions are garbage BUT it will lead me down the right path. it’s a rubber duck that can talk back. So in that regards it has improved my build times, it has sped me up without actually touching the code itself.
THAT’s what AI/LLMs SHOULD be used for. an assistant that doesn’t directly interact with the project. a consultant to your code if you will.
unfortunately many people can’t make that separation and they sit on both sides of the fence.

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Help with Repacks on LinuxEnglish
3·22 days agohave you tried running/installing the repack via steam? that’s what I do and I rarely have issues. at least not as many issues if I were to run/install it via Lutris.
I don’t know other than that. Repacks on Linux are hit or miss.
“depends”.
When I first switched to linux I used Mint and it was a horrible experience with my laptop at the time for gaming. the laptop itself was a hybrid Nvidia/AMD GPU so…I mean…Not a great experience for most distros but it was REALLY bad on Mint.
on other Distros it was better but I was regulated to Wayland only as hybrids on X11 are just a no go.
So depending on your setup gaming on linux can potentially just be as easy as installing steam or it can turn into a chore.
it has something called “Shelly” which is funny because months ago when the dev of Shelly released the thing I said “you should honestly get in contact with the CachyOS folks” and now it does have Shelly.
It’s a pretty great GUI for installing AUR stuff, packages, and flatpaks.
I like CachyOS and it’s my go to if I want to use Arch. Everytime I install Arch I always forget something, always. so then it’s trying to remember what I did the last time to get something to work correctly. With CachyOS it’s just good to go for me. and they’ve really improved the install process and cut out A LOT of bloat. Before it would take forever to install Cachy but now it’s quick and the only thing I really have to remove when it’s done is alacritty and firefox. Paired with KDE it’s smooth sailing and great performance.

Linux@programming.dev•STOP OMARCHY - Boycott Tech's Far-Right BackersEnglish
251·29 days agoAnd this is just going to fuel on the fire that is DHH’s crusade. He’s already called the linux community “a bunch of clowns” so this is just going to generate more money for his dotfiles and more than likely grow the userbase.
Granted the Omarchy userbase are a bunch of morons. Also doesn’t help that youtube linux content creators are all pretty much praising the damn thing and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know why. Makes it easy to know which creators to unsub from but it literally leaves it with 4 left one of which doesn’t post anymore.
this is by design. NO COMPANY in the entire world is going to provide a product in hopes that one day you won’t need to use it anymore. So dating apps, by design, provide you with horrible matches so that you keep using said app. They don’t want you finding the “love of your life”, it’s bad business if they did.

11·1 month agohonestly once you learn how to install Gentoo and/or NetBSD every other install is an absolute cake walk.
Really though like you said it’s valuable knowledge to learn.

Linux@programming.dev•Noctalia 5 Wayland Desktop Shell Is Now Officially StableEnglish
4·1 month agocould it look close? eh maybe. the visual customization of it is still kinda limited. like if you’re looking to have the same customization levels of say Plasmashell you’re out of luck. If you’re ok with the “pill” look then it’s fine but beyond that you couldn’t make it look like say DWM’s bar or what have you. But I suppose if you wanted it to look like cosmic or maybe gnome it’d be more doable since they all kinda share the same principal of “pills are a great look”
As far as if it’ll play nice with GNOME? no clue. I’ve used it with Kwin in the past as a replacement for Plasmashell and it worked fairly well.

51·1 month agoyou don’t use Noctalia alongside plasmashell, it just works alongside Kwin so I’m assuming that’s what OP meant. Noctalia just replaces your plasmashell.
