Not unique to you. Been using Github every day for over 15 years and it wasn’t until I started using Refined Github that it was easy to find the releases page. Horrific design.

I mean that part makes sense. This is essentially the exact same community. Linux users will spread to any “general” Linux community on the web.

It’s pretty hard to fit all of what you just said into a meme. For example your meme does not say that windows users are “dismissing any alternative out of hand”. It says windows users that refuse to switch. Maybe they hate windows but they literally must use Fusion 360 or AutoDesk or Meshmixer or RealityCapture or one of the numerous other software options that just do not work on windows.

Anyway, if what your meme is actually about is people that only use the browser and then refuse to switch but still constantly complain then yeah you’re dead on.

No I’m talking about complaining about the problems you’re having with Linux not asking for help with anything. It’s literally happened in this exact community here, where people ask what issues people encounter with Linux, and if I (or others) say I have any issues I get downvoted to hell.

Yeah it’s super weird, if you go to a specific forum for help, like cachyos or bazzite, the community is bearable, and sometimes very helpful without being rude. But if you go to a general forum and state you’re having any issues with Linux you’ll be downvoted to hell and told Linux is still better than windows.

I’m honestly astounded at how many people are suggesting Mint. I recently switched full time to linux and even as a software dev, Mint has to be one of the worst experiences I’ve had with a computer. Not only driver issues, but software issues and general buginess. Along with being butt-ugly, I do not think any windows user is going to confuse Mint for Windows.

I switched my wife to Bazzite (not necessarily recommending that) and she literally didn’t notice it was a different operating system (even though I told her it was and walked her through it). Bazzite has a nice UI for installing pretty much anything a normie would be thinking to install. The only issue we’ve had so far is that Dropbox just outright does not work on it. I’ve filed a bug with them and have been awaiting a response from their dev team for like two months now. I’m sure they’ll fix it eventually, but if you need the Dropbox UI (you can use rsync otherwise) then don’t choose Bazzite.

As for myself, after trying out like 6 different OSes, I settled on CachyOS. There are still issues, but it’s pretty dang stable and they’re very fast to fix issues. It’s not for a person not willing to touch a terminal at least once though.

I struggled with WinApps as well. wasn’t ever able to get gpu passthrough working either, and trying to do so really destabilized my computer. I pretty much gave up. That’s not to say that WinApps doesn’t work. It does, it’s just not near native for me. There’s definitely slowness, at least with Lightroom, I haven’t tested with PS yet, though I have installed it.

then why is every linux advocate stating that all that matters is picking your distro? If the system needs to have the OS preinstalled then the distro doesn’t matter at all. Yet that still really isn’t the problem. Installing an OS from a flash drive (distros are just as easy to install as windows is and people have been installing windows fine from hard media for decades) is a different realm of troubleshooting than driver issues. Either linux is ready for people to start installing any distro on their gaming rig to migrate off of Windows or it’s not. And it clearly isn’t.

You went into no detail at all, so it’s literally up to the reader’s imagination. photo touch up could mean literally filling in freckles, well use the eyedropper tool and draw over them. Color science could mean checking the color profile of your monitor, the colors in paint are HSL. Retro pixel art is literally just drawing, you just don’t get the help of pixel by pixel drawing, you’ll have to manage that yourself. Your response indicated nothing about how you use GIMP, and honestly, I doubt you have used any really in depth features that Photoshop provides.

sure, but then you’re alienating an entire userbase that can install an OS (which is just a flash drive and hitting a few keys during startup), but absolutely does not have the willpower to sit and figure out configuration on their new OS that absolutely does not work out of the box. Shit, I have enough to deal with in my daily life, I don’t want to be debugging driver issues. I haven’t had driver issues in windows or mac for over a decade, yet it’s the very first thing you encounter on a new distro install.

also they didn’t mention anything that couldn’t be done in MS Paint lol. something Gimp still doesn’t have - Content Aware Delete which was added in 2010…literally 15 years ago.

anyone that wants to use their computer for basic things like netflix or watching any content at all will notice the difference. They won’t be able to tell you it’s HDR, but they will think “why does this look worse than it did on windows”?

they’re very correct. Last month I tried out Zorin (which was recommended by one of the linux communities here) and sound didn’t even work properly. I plan on writing up a full doc for the linux community on the problems a staff software engineer had with a basic no-frills install (I’m trying to find a distro for my wife), but Linux is absolutely not ready for the general populace.

that is most definitely not the process. You have to explicitly go into Steam’s settings > Compatibility > “Enable Steam Play for all other titles” (what in the world, it’s called Steam Play, not Proton?) and then additionally select which Proton version you want. If you don’t know this, or don’t google it with the right keywords, you won’t understand why literally 90% of your library isn’t available (in my case it was 99% of my library, I think I only had 3 games available on linux natively). Also if you select the wrong Proton version some games won’t run, so you have to know that and switch it for those games only.
