Well I guess that’s what I’m asking. It has to be stored as data in some format. It should be possible to get that data and not be able to do anything useful with it. Unless the storage on the cartridge itself has some additional hardware that needs to be bypassed (which would be the breaking DRM part). Or I guess the cartridge itself has something separate from the software data that isn’t easy to imitate with a cartridge of your own.
I haven’t paid attention to the details of how copy protection works since the PSX, which put some information in a physical area of the disk that couldn’t be read or written to by consumer hardware.
If anyone knows from a more technical perspective - where exactly would the DRM breaking come into play?
I think I understand correctly that to take (for example) a Switch cartridge and pull out the game on it in a way that it could be playable on an emulator involves breaking DRM somehow.
But if that requires cracking or decrypting, shouldn’t it also be possible to pull a copy of the protected software off the cartridge? And have an actual unmodified backup of the software that couldn’t be played in an emulator without modification, but could still be read by the original hardware?
Probably more of a “Do x, y, and z and we agree not to sue you about it”

Very relatable. Unfortunately we just don’t live in a world where that’s currently possible right now.
I’m planning to switch to some Linux or other at end of support for W10. I’m hoping Proton will take care of most of the games I want to play, and a single-purpose Windows VM will take care of the rest, if that’s not too big of a security risk to the host OS.
Having the data could still be helpful for tracking your progress towards recovering from some of those things in the long term. 🤷

Truthfully, I couldn’t remember any of the other competitor brands that I considered when deciding on a Drinkmate originally. Sodastream was just the one that came to mind.
That’s mildly concerning! There are risks associated with using less-than food-grade CO2 in beverages.
Get yourself a countertop carbonator like a Sodastream or Drinkmate.
I have a Drinkmate, and they have a CO2 cylinder exchange program where you can get a heavy discount on more cylinders by returning the empty ones beforehand (prepaid shipping label included with cylinder packs.)
Other than the initial cost of the machine and any additional cylinders you want (I have a total of five, so I can install the last one and ship back four empties for a coupon, but that’s probably a little overkill for one person), the ongoing cost is reasonable. I make 1-2L of soda water pretty much every day and I get a little over a month out of each cylinder. Works out to less than $15 a month for me.

Uh, nope, you’re putting words in my mouth. It’s not realistic to worry about mitigating that kind of stuff when we can’t even prevent ourselves from cooking ourselves, and several of the things you listed don’t even have plausible technical solutions right now. Nice try, though.
