I feel like outdated software on the stable distro like Debian has become less of a problem with the development of flatpak.

Ardour is definitely professional grade, but I must say that it’s far from simple to setup. First, you may not have the latest version available in you SW repository and you would have to compile it yourself! Then, despite all the progress brought by pipewire, audio config in Linux is complicated and unreliable, especially for this time of work, requiring different audio devices, MIDI control interfaces and VSTs.

I am not an audio professional, I’m an amateur, and found myself demotivated by the amount of work required until I am ready to create music, and finally gave up :(

I use Duplicity to backup my home directory, excluding Steam and Downloads folders. It is setup to backup weekly to my NAS mounted as NFS. The NAS has a weekly cron task to upload the backups to pCloud using rclone. I backup this way, several computers (2 desktop, 2 laptop, the NAS as well). The files included in this strategy are essentially my photos, documents and configs. My software installations, games, media library are not backed up.

VM GPU passthrough is a thing, but I wasn’t successful with it (didn’t try that hard TBH). You need to make sure your CPU and Motherboard and GPU all have the required features and they are activated (iommu and what not). Not sure if you still need a second GPU for this setup to work (e.g. embedded graphics)? Anyway, don’t count on this solution to work until you have check that your HW can absolutely make it work and that you are ready to spend hours setting this up. It can be an interesting learning experience, definitely the more advanced stuff when it comes to VM. I think some were successful with Anti-Cheat with this method, by using the Microsoft Hypervisor from inside de VM somehow.

Windows 7 made me switch to Linux ! I skipped over Visa entirely by using some obscure XP 64bit version for years. Then, 7 came out, and I was like “WTF is this crap ?”. I was particularly infuriated by the complexity to setup network shares, you always had to navigate to some obscure menu to turn off some hidden “security” settings, but “media share” on he other hand, this shit was always ON even if nobody asked for it, or ever used it. Now I have to use Win11 at work. In retrospective, 7 wasn’t so bad…

Well, my work computer is pretty much that already. My company is full-on Google suite. We are not supposed to store any files on the computers, we don’t have any back-ups for the computers’ storage. Everything is supposed to be on Google Drive and 90% of the work is done with Google Docs, Sheets, Slides.

I think many big companies would be very happy if they could have a key-in-hand solution with laptops as “user-terminals” with all processing and files handled in a cloud. Of course there are some important considerations like confidentiality, cybersecurity and GDPR. Network/electricity is another one, but this is already the case today that almost no work can be done in either of these situations.

Got a new laptop at work this summer and also got updated from win10 to win11 at the same time. I don’t understand why everything is so much slower on win11 ! Starting the system use to be 30s now it’s 3 minutes. Opening file explorer, slow. Opening a picture, slow. Opening an almost empty Excel sheet, guess it’s time for coffee. Switching desktop views, omg soooo slow!

I haven’t watched the show before, but it’s been my Sunday ritual for a little while now. I watch while ironing my shirts, it’s really good ! Character writing is 10/10.

I am joking of course. I am a privacy freak myself:

1. All my computers run Linux
2. I self-host all what I can and encrypt as much as I can by myself too
3. On desktop, Mic and Cam are connected to a USB hub with individual switches such that they are powered ON only when I need them
4. Laptop is a Framework 13 with HW switches for both Cam and Mic

There is something about the webcam switch on the Lenovo from work, that I like better than the Framework: The switch also physically blocks the camera. It makes me feel more safe and it’s actually much more intuitive to understand when it is disable. On Framework, the switch shows either red or black, but I never know what is enable and disable. Is it red for “Careful, it’s active !” or red for “Disable” ? (It’s Red=Disable, Black=Active).

Hackers won’t have much to blackmail me, I fap completely silently.

I am always on the freshest Fedora Workstation, and all the extensions I use are always supported from the start. I don’t use that many to be honest. But, is extensions compatibility really an issue nowadays?

Sorry, but it’s also beyond my understanding. As far as I can understand, run0 doesn’t use a sandbox, but will better isolate the privileged processes from unprivileged ones when executing a command.
