Of course it’s not necessary. I’m a way-beyond-senior dev who laughed at LLMs up until a few months ago when trusted friends, whose competence is not in question, told me they got good usage out of them.

I decided to challenge my convictions and sat down and took the time to learn how to use LLM assistants (I tried everyting from full vibe coding to manual gatekeeping of suggestions).

Now I use them for my own personal projects, and I’m much more productive (for various reasons - but one is that the initial friction of oh yet another thing I have to learn just to do X is much lower. I have no boss telling me what to do, and I select my projects myself. If they didn’t bring any benefits I wouldn’t use them.

That’s my personal view as well and so all apps I write are “licensed” as CC0. Other maintainers are taking a different view.

Having a policy against bad apps is fine - but that’s not what this policy says.

It’s trivial to write a good app using LLM aids - but that new app won’t have such a history.

No. Creators getting paid “magically” through ad revenue where any other form of payment system has higher friction is the pattern that needs to get defeated. Flattr was well on their way to a model that could’ve worked, but it still needs the consumers to take an extra step to “fund” what then gets distributed.

If you run Asahi Linux of course you could reboot - what you’re linking is that the functionality got mainlined.

I run Asahi on an M1 Macbook Pro and the only functionality I’ve ever found missing is USB-C video out. It works so well otherwise that I completely forgot it isn’t there and sat together with a customer not understanding why I couldn’t get a picture up on their presentation screen.

I’ve paid $$$ for that in commercial settings. Getting it for free is actually crazy.

The technical terms are actually how all patents are written, so nothing special there. I don’t approve of things like this being patentable at all, but I actually expect this to be novel the way it’s written.

However, no one needs to infringe upon it - it’s trivial to change something ever so slightly so as to not do exactly what’s described here.

No the EU law does not require manufacturers to disallow unlocking the bootloader. Actually, it specifically says the law should NOT be used as an excuse to do that.

The law requires high security when it comes to the radio (baseband) part of the phone - and that has always been a separate enclave anyway compared to the OS.

FWIW the founder of Kagi is adamant that subscribers must accept part of the subscruption money being sent to Russia (Yandex, fully govt-controlled) and has refused all attempts at excluding it. When questions started appearing he even tried claiming Yandex isn’t even russian.
