If time is the only problem with self hosting we should work on this even more because it’s only accessibility issue.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Can the US government force Canonical and Red Hat to disallow downloads and development from non US countries?
3·6 months agoCompete with what ? I want to see a decent budget and at least 5 year plan first. The scenario is ridiculous, each distribution have so many mirrors that you can’t just ban internet, baning development is even more unrealistic given the nature of linux development. What they gonna do, ban email ? https://git-scm.com/docs/git-send-email
There is no difference in core of those services, all of them are visual interfaces for file versioning software called git. You can easily use git without any of these services. If you’re starting to explore those technologies I personally recommend getting used to git and ssh. You can read more here on how to use git and ssh https://git-scm.com/book/en/v2/Git-on-the-Server-Getting-Git-on-a-Server
Answers:
- Github was initially written in ruby.
- The difference is memory usage, complexity of depoyment, compatibility with github features, maintenence and community support.
- Self hosting depends on various factors like usage preferences, number of users, business requirements, budget, hosting machine processing power, and amount of time you want to spend for maintenence and learning the platform.
Replace OS before they replace you. Linux - the last adventure.

In the most pessimistic scenario it’s the only future (hope ) people have if they want to stay being people. The most pessimistic future of the commercial internet is every piece of information locked behind your personalized chat bot, every content tailored to you only and generated by machine. Just hook up to the matrix, they’re waiting for you.
