It depends on your usecase. We need more detail regarding what application (gui/cui/open source/proprietary/custom) you are trying to use

• Check if the application you want to use exists as snap/flatpak/appimage.
• If it exists, install the application as per their standard operating mechansim
• Once used, just remove them. Your original system libs are untouched

If the application doesn’t exist in those platforms, it’s a different story. You might need to use distrobox or docker. Don’t use nix because it’s overkill for what you want to do.

Use Librewolf if

• You do not approve of Mozilla’s direction with Firefox (I personally don’t have an issue)
• You don’t want to be fingerprinted by every websites
• Want to be very privacy conscious

If these are not your requirements, stick with Firefox. When you switch to Librewolf, you have to give up some QoL features (dark mode, adaptable screen size and more). Unfortunately, privacy in the modern web requires some sacrifice.

Remember folks, Chromium project is under Google’s control. They don’t care about web-standards. They just make their own standards since they have a 70% market share. The only notable Chromium fork which is worth mentioning is Ungoogled Chromium.

Don’t expect it to behave like a normal browser. If you think some feature is disabled, it’s to avoid browser fingerprinting, not because it’s buggy. Read their FAQ before committing to the browser.

Valve can poke Rockstar but they (Valve) can’t magically make the anticheat work. It has to come from the developer

• Wipe OS and install Bazzite/Nobara
• Install Heroic Launcher / Non Steam Launcher
• Install games from them

Hi there, just a small correction. Compared to existing linux distros, it’s slightly different. Steam OS is an immutable OS, which means you can’t edit the root partition (Like you can’t edit the C:\ drive in Windows). This is both good and bad.

Good -> Users can’t mess up their device while trying to mess around with it. Updates are smooth because Valve knows the previous state of the OS.

Bad -> It’s bad only for extreme power users as it’s not fully customizable. You can’t run your own kernel, install certain build packages to do some advanced stuff. But this is a tiny tiny bad.

Overall, Steam OS is great and I believe will be the gateway for the general PC crowd.
