“From scratch” typically means the starting point is zero.
Quite antithetical to the author’s definition of “mostly provided by the entire human knowledge base blender”
Even though its unreviewed LLM code and therefore most likely spaghetti, its still an incredible achievement. In my opinion, now they should re-implement their driver by hand. All the hard reverse engineering is done.
Its probably quicker than reviewing that mess.
So they used their hypervisor to clean wall reverse engineer how the apple gpu driver/firmware works, and then built their own half of the implementation. Yeah, it uses Claude for a lot of the rote work, but the fact that it even got done is impressive. They’re looking for people that can do code review/test/revisions now, to make sure the driver is solid and can be upstreamed. Also it’s a Rust driver.
